"A dollar store located in Leachville has been one of my long time goals," Mayor Wells said. "I've talked to a lot of folks through the years. After talking to representatives of Dollar General, I came to the conclusion that we wanted the Dollar General in Leachville."
Wells said he was persistent in acquiring his goal for the residents of Leachville and the surrounding area. Construction will soon begin on the 9,100 square foot building that will be set on 1.07 acres. It will be located north of Leachville across from Adam's Land Company.
Mayor Wells said he gathered names on petitions, talked to the mayors in Senath, Cardwell, Hornersville and Arbyrd asking for their support as well as Leachville residents to show a united group in his efforts.
"This is something we have needed for a long time," Wells said.
"When we came to Leachville to talk to Mayor Wells about building a bank here, one of the first things he asked us was if we could help get a Dollar Store," Greg Miller, President and CEO of Southern Bank of Commerce, said.
Also present for the groundbreaking were Mr. and Mrs. Alan Rice of Corning, the new landlords of Leachville's Dollar General. They are also landlords for the Dollar General store in Caraway. The new Leachville store will be identical to the Caraway store.
Sanford expressed his appreciation to Mayor Wells, The Southern Bank of Commerce, Mr. and Mrs. Rice, and Boe Adams.
"They have been instrumental in making this work," Sanford said.
Sanford has been with Dollar General for eight years. He has been a part of the new stores in Manila, Caraway, Lake City and others in Jonesboro. He serves as the real estate representative for Arkansas. Mark Fagan serves as district manager. Fagan was unable to attend the groundbreaking ceremony.
"Our mission is: Serving Others -- For customers…a better life; for shareholders…a superior return; for employees…respect and opportunity," Sanford said. "We are happy to be offering this neighborhood shopping store in Leachville and the surrounding area."
Sanford said the area stores will be adding 20 foot freezers and start carrying a line of milk, ice cream and other dairy products. The Leachville store will open with it. Debit cards will be accepted.
Sanford said the company opened 66 stores in 26 states during the five week period ending April 2. Dollar General is a Fortune 500 discount retailer with 6,874 neighborhood stores. For the four week period ending Feb. 27, 119 new stores were opened.
A large number turned out for the ground breaking. Following the groundbreaking, a reception was held at Leachville City Hall.
