Mustangs down Warriors in opener
The Buffalo Island Central Mustangs opened the 2004 baseball season with an impressive 6-1 victory over the Westside Warriors Monday night at Monette.
Sophomore Derek Rolland started the game on the mound and picked up the victory, pitching five innings of three-hit baseball, giving up one earned one while striking out six. Brandon Ballard came on in the sixth and worked the final two innings to pick up the save. Ballard fanned five while giving up no hits.
Brooks Taylor, Preston Despain, and Matthew Ibanez all drove in runs for the 1-0 Mustangs.
After dropping a tough 2-1 decision Tuesday night to Riverside, BIC bounced back on Thursday with an 8-5 victory over the always-tough Greene County Tech Golden Eagles.
Brett Sexton smashed a two-run homer in the second inning, while Mark Hawkins added two hits, including a triple in the fifth inning. Derek Rolland and Matthew Ibanez had two hits apiece as the Ponies improved to 2-1 on the year.
Brandon Ballard picked up the victory, scattering six hits while allowing two earned runs in five innings of work. Ballard fanned eight Eagles on the night.
Jeremy Mitchell hit a fourth inning home run for Tech, while Jason Ballard had a two-run triple in the seventh to pace the GCT attack.
