BIC girls split two last week

The Buffalo Island Central girls teams split against Marmaduke and Weiner last week, with the seniors falling twice while the juniors remained undefeated with a pair of wins.

Host Marmaduke was ahead 29-24 at the half in a game played Monday of last week and went on to win 63-50.

Three players scored for BIC -- Nan Lee Bridges 21, Jae Ashabranner 17 and Holly Cagle 12. Leading in rebounding were Cagle with 10 and Bridges with seven; Kelly Wright added four boards, as did Jency Key.

BIC stayed close against Weiner for a half, trailing only 27-23. But the Lady Cardinals went on to win 62-46 in a game played Thursday at Leachville.

Leading BIC scoring were Ashabranner 22, Cagle 14 and Bridges 10. Bridges led in rebounding with five and Ashabranner added three assists.

Jessica Shepard scored 20 and Stephanie Baldridge added 18 as the Junior Mustangs defeated Marmaduke, 63-50. BIC led only 22-21 at the break.

Also scoring for the winners were Ashley Tate 8 (also six rebounds), Kasey Garrett 2, Jera Ashabranner 1 and Lauryn Smith 1. Shepard also had five rebounds and Ashabranner added five assists.

BIC pounded Weiner, 37-18, after leading 20-8 at intermission.

Baldridge led the way with 18 points. Also scoring were Shepard 8, Ashabranner 8, Garrett 6 and Tate 4. Tate also had five rebounds for the Junior Mustangs.

The senior team was scheduled to travel Monday night to Brookland and will host Armorel on Thursday.

The Junior Mustangs will attempt to add the district tournament crown to their regular-season title. The tournament is being played this week in Walnut Ridge.
