The Monette City Council met in regular session Monday, Jan. 26, and worked through a busy but short agenda.
The council accepted a $135,000 contract bid from Murdock Construction Company of Marianna to build the new safe room adjacent to the Monette Fire Department. A grant of $100,000 will be used for construction, which includes 75 percent federal funds, 12 1/2 percent state funding, and 12 1/2 percent local funding. A separate city account will be set up for the Shelter/Safe Room project. The city's share of the project expenses will be $34,000, and will be transferred from their general fund to the project account.
The council approved the 2004 city budget, totalling $990,958.50.
The city projected $25,000 be allocated from the general fund, as the city's donation for the Youth Park, in conjunction with the requested grant.
Residential sanitation rates will increase in 2004 from $7.50 to $9.00 with rate changes for commercial.
The city projected $40,000 for street paving during 2004.
Reports were given on city water improvement plans, which included efforts being made to secure property easements along the western edge of the city. City attorney Curt Huckaby has notified property owners of plans to obtain easements through formal litigation, should an agreement not be reached. Committee reports were given at the close of the meeting.
The next regularly scheduled council meeting will be at 7 p.m. Feb. 23 at city hall.
