The final score of 63-44 is misleading in the game between 3A Manila Lions and 5A Blytheville Chickasaws in Friday action in the NEA Invitational at Jonesboro.
In second round action, Manila's David had to face the number one Goliath of Blytheville.
Manila came out a little timid in the first quarter, trailing the Chicks 13-3. The Lions roared back in the second, outscoring Blytheville 15-11 for a halftime score of 24-18. Manila kept it within 10 in the third, trailing 37-29. Blytheville pushed the lead in the fourth but the Lions wouldn't go away, pulling within two before the Chicks went on the final run outscoring the Lions 26-15 in the fourth to advance.
Jordan Wise led MHS with 16 points, followed by 12 from Matt Noble. Others scoring were Justin Hil 7, Anthony Lancaster 4, Cody Wells 3 and Derrick Wright 2. John Fowler paced Blytheville with 19 (15 in the decisive fourth quarter). David Williams added 14 for the Chicks.
Manila advanced in the first round of the NEA with a 60-59 win over the Corning Bobcats. The Lions led 17-10 after one but the Bobcats came back in the second to take a 26-24 halftime advantage. Manila pulled within one after three as Corning led 40-39. Manila pulled ahead of Corning in the fourth and held on for the slim victory.
Jordan Wise led MHS with 20 points as teammate Matt Noble added 17. Others scoring in the win were Chase Shelton 9. Cody Wells 5, Justin Hill 4, Derrick Wright 3 and Anthony Lancaster 2.
Manila will host EPC on Tuesday, Jan. 6.
