Mustangs place second in tourney
The Buffalo Island Central Mustangs took their game and their thus far 12-0 record to the KFC/Taco Bell/Pepsi Classic at Jonesboro High School Thursday night to Play Overton High School out of Memphis,Tennessee.
Although the Mustangs didn't know what to expect, they were able to come away with a 73-58 victory against Overton, who were the defending champs of the tournament. Brandon Ballard led the way with 25 points followed by Brooks Taylor who finished with 21. Mark Hawkins added 14, Josh Nettles 7, Josh Shepard 4, and Mark Teguns finished with 2.
The Mustangs shot the ball well from the free throw line connecting on 24 of their 29 attempts. "We gave a good effort against an athletic ball club," said BIC coach Bill Taylor, "we were very good on the boards as well."
The Mustangs were back in action again on Friday night against Trezevant High School out of Memphis. Once again the Mustangs were playing a tough opponent that they knew nothing about; but were still able to record a 75-60 victory. "At one point we were up by 17," BIC coach Bill Taylor said, "they were able to cut the lead to three. Our guys showed a lot of poise and were able to come away with the win."
Brandon Ballard, who was playing with an injury to his hand he suffered in the previous game, had a game high 30 points. Brooks Taylor was right behind him with 24 of his own. Mark Hawkins chipped in 11, Josh Nettles had 8, and Josh Shepard finished with 2. The Mustangs improved to 13-0 with the victory.
The BIC Mustangs played Saturday night in the finals of the KFC/Taco Bell/Pepsi classic against the Jonesboro Hurricane. The Mustangs kept the game close the entire way but were unable to win falling to the AAAAA Hurricane 71-63. "We had numerous chances to take control but could never get the lead." Said BIC coach Bill Taylor, "I am very proud of our guys playing so hard and well against such physical, athletic competition."
Leading the Mustangs in scoring was Mark Hawkins who hit 8 three-pointers finishing with 24 points. Hawkins was followed by Brooks Taylor with 17, Brandon Ballard with 15, Josh Shepard with 3, and Mark Teguns and Josh Nettles chipped in 2 each.
Ballard, Taylor, and Hawkins were named to the All-Tournament team. The Mustangs are back in action Tuesday night at Beebe.
