Buffalo Island Central blew open a close game with an early fourth quarter explosion led by the trio of Brooks Taylor, Brandon Ballard and Mark Hawkins, to outlast the very tough Abundant Life Owls 68-56 Saturday night in Little Rock.
Taylor pumped in a game high 26, Ballard added 20, while Hawkins finished with 12 to lead the Mustang assault. Rounding out the BIC scoring was Mark Teguns with six, while Josh Shepard and Brett Sexton scored two each. BIC led 12-10 after the first quarter, 27-25 at the half, and 45-37 after three quarters.
With the sin, BIC improves to a perfect 3-0 on the season, while Abundant Life dropped to 5-2 on the year. The Owls, who won 31 games a year ago and returned four starters from last year's team placed two players in double figures. David Simpson had 18 points while Zac Ray pumped in 17 points.
Leading by just eight heading into the final quarter, the Mustangs broke the game open with an early fourth period surge to stretch the lead to as many as 27, before emptying their bench. BIC hit eight three-pointers on the night, but shot only eight free throws, connecting on four. The Owls had three treys and were 15-32 at the charity stripe.
"We really got it going at the start of the fourth quarter," said BIC Head Coach Bill Taylor. "We got out of the gate slow in the first half, and played a little out of control. We didn't shoot very well in the first half, but we settled down and played very well in the second half. This was a good experience for us. I feel like we beat a very good ball club," added the Mustang coach.
