A short handed Buffalo Island Central Senior Lady Mustang team, consisting of only seven players, got off to a sluggish start, dropping their first three games of the 2003-04 basketball season.
The Lady Mustangs traveled to Weiner for their opener, losing 63-37 to the Lady Cardinals. The Lady Mustangs placed two players in double figures, Jae Ashabranenr and Nan Lee Bridges, both scored 10 points a piece to lead the way for BIC. Tara Roach had eight, Holly Cagle chipped in seven and Kelly Wright added two to round out the Lady Mustang scoring attack. Weiner placed three players in double figures, led by Kamri Mack with 22 points. Micah Dale scored 15 and Phenix Butler added 10 for the Lady Cardinals.
The Lady Mustangs then opened play in the Joe V. Jones Classic at Leachville. Their first game matched them against Wickes, as BIC dropped a 57-35 decision. Holly Cagle led the way for BIC with 12 points, while Jae Ashabranner added 10. Tara Roach scored five, Nan Lee Bridges added four, while Kelly Wright and Sasha Barnett chipped in two a piece. For Wickes, Lakyn Garrison led all scorers with 22 points, while Karen Garcia was close behind with 17.
In Saturday's game, Viola rolled past BIC 56-37, as Melinda Guffey poured in 17 points and Kayla Batterton added 11 more to lead the Longhorns' to victory. BIC was paced by Holly Cagle's 12 points while Jae Ashabranner scored 10.
The BIC Junior Lady Mustangs are off to a 3-0 start. Head Coach Mike Kinard said, "This group is very talented, but it's still early in the season, and they have a long way to go. He added that his senior girls are off to a slow start, but the most important thing is that they have improved with each game and he feels they can be a very good team by the end of the year.
