Buffalo Island Central played host to the inaugural Joe V. Jones Tipoff Classic Thursday through Saturday at Leachville, but their opponents left feeling less than welcome, as the Mustangs rolled to two impressive blowout victories.
In BIC's opener, Brooks Taylor poured in a game high 33 points, while Brandon Ballard added 26 more, as the Mustangs fought off a pesky Class A Wickes team 92-71 Thursday night. The first quarter was a see-saw affair and ended with the scored tied at 22 each. Wickes' Trad Williams scored 15 of his team high 30 points in the opening quarter to keep his club in the game. However, BIC used a late second quarter surge to open up a 46-40 halftime lead. In the third period, Taylor went to work on the inside, and the Mustangs built their lead to 15 by the end of the quarter, 69-54. Wickes tried to stay with the Ponies, but BIC had too much fire power and pulled away for their first factory of the season. Mark Hawkins scored 15 on five treys, and Josh Nettles added nine to aid the Mustang cause.
On Saturday night, the Mustangs drilled 17 three pointers, with Brandon Ballard hitting eight of those on his way to a game high 32 points, as BIC destroyed Delight 76-38. The Mustangs canned 11 treys in the first half alone in building a 44-21 lead at intermission. Two other Mustangs scored in double figures. Brooks Taylor scored 14 points while Mark Hawkins chipped in 12 more. BIC improves to 2-0 on the young season, and will host Crawfordsville Tuesday night at Monette before traveling to Little Rock on Friday night to face Abundant Life.
In junior high action, BIC rolled to a 53-34 opening season victory over the Armorel Tigers on Saturday morning in the Joe V. Jones Tipoff Classic.
