Riverside boys improve to 3-1

Riverside's tennis team played two matches last week, first traveling to Nettleton, and then closing the week with a match at Trumann.

The Riverside boys suffered their first team loss of the year, 7-5, at the hands of the Raiders. In singles action, Rebel Lee Blake defeated Blake Dixon, 7-5, while teammate Von McDaniel downed Andrew Nadzam, 6-1. The Raiders rallied in matches three through six, sweeping all four. First, Kevin Davis defeated Zac Reynolds 6-4, Gil Gutierrez blanked Blake Barnes 6-0, Justin McGarity beat Kabe Taylor 7-6 (7-4) while Kyle Kelley beat Alex Smith 6-3. Michael Dewitt salvaged the last singles match by defeating Trey Swan 6-2.

In doubles action, the number one team of Blake and McDaniel led the Rebels to a 6-0 win over the Raider team of Dixon-Nadzam. Again the Raiders rallied by winning matches two and three as Davis-Gutierrez beat Taylor-Dewitt 6-1 and Adam Walters and Tim Haynes defeated Tyler Timms and Matt Snyder 6-4. The two teams split the last two matches of the day with Riverside winning the first as Reynolds-Barnes defeated Keith Polsgrove and Andrew Allen 6-3. In the deciding match of the day, Kelley-McGarity downed the Rebel tandem of Matt Owens-Alex Smith 6-0.

In girls action, Riverside and Nettleton battled to a 4-4- tie. Nettleton took four out of five singles matches with Riverside's only win coming at #4 singles as Keryn Douglas beat Kim McDaniel 7-6 (8-6). In #1 singles, Nettleton's Jill Crisler defeated Miranda Boyd 6-1. In the second match, Rayna Kingston beat Heather Webb 6-4. At #3 Natal Desai beat Hailey Faulkner 7-6 (7-4), while the #5 match went to the Raiders' Amanda Wallace 6-4 over Miranda Stephens.

Riverside rallied to gain a tie in the match by sweeping the doubles competition. Webb-Faulkner defeated Desai-McDaniel 6-3, Boyd-Douglas shut out Stephanie McGentry-Becky Nichols 6-0, and Boyd-Stephens routed Jessie Newholt and Taylor Reid 6-0.

Later in the week, the Rebels traveled to Trumann with the boys winning 5-1, while the girls dropped a close 3-2 match.

On the boys side in singles play, Josh Ball lost to Trumann's Joe Timbs 4-6. Then the Rebels took over, sweeping the next five matches, three in singles and both doubles. Zac Reynods defeated Trumann's Blake Wright 6-4, Matt Owens beat Merritt Davis 6-1, while Alex Smith shut out Michael Wilcoxson 6-0. The #1 doubles team of Lee Blake and Von McDaniel downed Timbs -Wright 6-3, and Kabe Taylor and Michael Dewitt beat the team of Davis-Wilcoxson 6-1.

On the girls side, Riverside's Chelsea Couch and Miranda Boyd both won their matches. Couch defeated Megan McWayne 6-3, while Boyd beat Michelle Lucas 6-4. Then Trumann rallied, winning the last three matches to take home the victory. Julie Henderson started the comeback with a 6-3 win over Riverside's Heather Webb, then Michelle Lucas beat Hailey Faulkner 7-5. The deciding factor came down to the only doubles match of the afternoon when McWayne-Henderson beat Couch-Webb 6-3.

The Riverside boys now stand 3-1 on the year, while the girls have a 1-1-2 record.
