Wednesday, August 20, 2003

A men's and women's softball tournament was held at the Manila ballpark Friday and Saturday with all proceeds going to the Buffalo Island Cancer Relay for Life.

A total of ten teams participated.

Participating teams included:

Men's -- A&H, R&R Express, MLM Blasters (Manila/Leachville/Monette), IPSCO and Plaza Pharmacy.

Women's -- Fumble Bees, Misfits of Etowah, Clark's Rockets, Intimidators, and the Pink Ladies.

First place winners received trophies and tee-shirts with second and third place winners receiving trophies.

Winning first place were the Pink Ladies and the MLM Blasters. Second place trophies went to the Intimidators and Plaza Pharmacy. Third place winners were Clark's Rockets and A&H.

Brenda Matheny, Buffalo Island Relay for Life Steering Committee member said that the event raised $1,400.

"On behalf of the Buffalo Island Relay for Life steering committee, we want to thank Jeff Goff, Greg Martin and Mike Matheny who directed the tournament, all of the volunteer umpires, teams and workers that helped with the tournament. Without all of them, and the other teams that are raising money, we would not be able to raise funds for such a good cause. We also want to invite everyone to attend the Relay for Life that will be held at the Leachville City Park on Sept. 19," Matheny said.

Matheny said one of the special guests on hand for the tournament was Pat Hembrey, a cancer survivor. Her son, Mike Hembrey, umpired the women's games. She also had a daughter and a granddaughter playing in the tournament.
