The Arkansas Blasters, a tournament team made up of players from Manila, Monette, Lake City, Valley View and Paragould, have qualified to play in the USSSA 13 year old and under World Series. The World Series will be held in Tulsa, Okla., July 13-20.
The Arkansas Blasters placed first in a qualifying tournament and second in another qualifying tournament. They play Triple A Division Ball.
They have played in Millington, Blytheville, Marion, and Harrison this summer. They are coached by Donald Nunnally, Gary Weaver and James Cooper.
Team members are Chad Nunnally and Josh Jones of Manila; Chad Williams of Monette; Garrett Weaver, Shawn Mathews and Cody Richardson of Lake City; Chase Cooper, Dillon Osment, Codie Rollins, Hade Lynch and Austin Byrd of Valley View and Michael Westbrook of Paragould.
The team has a record of 11 wins and 17 losses.
"We have played some stiff competition this year in Triple A," Nunnally said. "We have played in tournaments against teams from Tennessee, all over Arkansas, and Mississippi."
These are dedicated young men that have played together for the last three years. This year they moved up to the 13 year old division and to Triple A.
In addition to working in two practices a week, they played three to six games a lot of weekends.
"We have to be well staffed in pitching and other positions for the tournaments when we play five or six games. It has been hot but these kids like baseball and they have come back three years in a row," Nunnally said.
Even though the team earned their spot to play, they must raise $6,000 to be able to go.
The team has been holding fund raisers and asking for donations.
"We appreciate everyone that has helped," Nunnally said.
If anyone would like to donate to help this team go and compete in the World Series, they can contact Nunnally at 561-331, 561-3526 or 243-2914 or Gary Weaver at 237-4817 or 930-8188.
