Manila 2003 alumni reunion draws large crowd
Approximately 150 Manila Alumni members gathered at the Manila Airport Center on Saturday evening for the 2003 Alumni Reunion.
Reunions don't just happen. It takes a lot of planning and hard work. Committee members worked for months getting ready to welcome friends and classmates.
The reunion was kicked off on Friday night with a get together at the Manila Airport Center. Several groups gathered there and other individual classes held reunions. The Class of 1953 met at the Manila Depot. Classmates from the 40's met at Ryan's Restaurant in Jonesboro and a group from the 1950's met at Janice Veach's home.
Mildred Ramsey of Ramsey's Plants & Things, decorated the auditorium with beautiful ferns and greenery. Dale Poag catered the dinner.
Members of the Alumni Association pay dues each year and some of that money is used to meet the needs of today's Manila students. A committee of teachers volunteers to serve and when they see the opportunity to help a student with a special need they have the funding thanks to the Manila Alumni Association. The funding has been used for such things as helping a student to go on a class trip, medical problems, the purchase of clothes, extra's needs for an athlete, or other special needs. Any of the Manila teachers in elementary or high school can request funding for a student's need.
Vada Atkins welcomed all of the guests and conducted a short business meeting and giving a financial report. She informed the group that after expenses last year, the MAA had $1,400 and after talking to the teachers at Manila on a project, it was decided to start a fund to purchase a new curtain for the auditorium stage. The fund has been set up at Heritage Bank and anyone that would like to make a contribution is welcome. The total cost of the project will be approximately $4,000.
The evening was spent catching up, visiting with old friends and remembering the days at MHS.
