Awards banquet held at BIC

The BIC Spring Sports Banquet was held on Thursday, May 8, at the BIC East cafeteria in Leachville. At the event, athletes participating in the school's spring sports were recognized for their achievements.

The first to present awards was girls' golf coach Mari Hayden, who named freshman Nan Lee Bridges as the team's medalist. Boys' coach Mike Bridges was next, naming senior John Eric Hawkins as the medalist for the year.

Coach Mike Kinard presented awards for girls' softball, recognizing the efforts of sophomore Rachel Dunigan, freshman Jessica Willyerd, and Nan Lee Bridges to the team.

Following the softball awards, baseball coach Bill Taylor spoke about his team's accomplishments this season. The team finished 22-8 and were named district champions and regional runner-up. The team also was the first in BIC history to make it to the state tournament, and they set a school record for wins in the sport.

Taylor presented several awards to his players. All-District players Preston Despain, Josh Shepard, Mark Hawkins, Brandon Ballard and Brett Sexton were recognized. Chris Deeds, Preston Despain and Josh Shepard were given All-Regional Tournament honors. Brett Sexton was named All-State, and Mark Hawkins was named All-State Tournament.

Mark Hawkins also received the award for the highest batting average. Josh Shepard was noted for most stolen bases, most runs scored and outstanding pitcher. Brett Sexton had the most runs batted in, and Brandon Ballard was named outstanding fielder.

This year's Richie Austin Memorial Award was presented to senior Leslie Cobb by Homer Craig, BIC principal. Craig also presented the Dusty Wood Memorial Award to juniors Mark Hawkins and Brett Sexton. Cal Rose was selected for the Mr. Mustang award, and Leslie Cobb also received the Miss Mustang title.
