Nine local 15-year-old recently participated in the Arkansas BCI Boys' basketball Eastern State Tournament held in Searcy on May 10-11, and came away as state runner-ups.
The Northeast Arkansas Dream Team, coached by Matt Rolland of Monette and Brian Hartwig of Corning, consists of players from Buffalo Island Central, Riverside, Corning, Harrisburg, and Westside. BIC team members are Derek Rolland, Randy Ibanez, Larry Reed, Hunter Smith, Cord Rose, and Eric Wallace. Rounding out the team is Riverside's Tyler Timms, Corning's Logan Hartwig, Harrisburg's Zac Owens, and Westside's Rhett Hubbard. Hubbard was unable to participate in the tournament due to an injury.
The Dream Team began pool play on Saturday, May 10 and emerged the number one seed from their pool of teams with a 64-50 defeat of Conway's Blazers, and a 66-65 win over the Texaco Stars. Leading scorers in the win over Conway were Derek Rolland with 16 points, Cord Rose with 15 points, Zac Owens with 12 and Tyler Timms with nine. In the narrow defeat of the Texaco Stars, Owens scored 17 points while Logan Hartwig added 16 and Rose contributed 11.
On Sunday, May 11, the Dream Team advanced to the championship game of the state tournament with a thrilling 55-53 win over the Conway Blazers. Rolland led the Dream Team scoring with 21 points, Owens added 14 and Rose contributed 11. In the championship game, the Dream Team lost 85-75 to the Arkansas Extreme.
Rolland blistered the nets with 25 points, Hartwig tallied 21, Timms scored 12 and Rose added nine.
By finishing as runner-ups, the Dream Team earned the right to participate in the national BCI Tournament in Lubbock, Texas, July 27-31.
