Pike completes rare triple play

Wednesday, May 28, 2003

In a scheduled 6:30 p.m. machine pitch baseball game played between Etowah and Leachville at Keiser, Number 20, Austin Pike, aged 7, who plays in the pitcher position for the Leachville A's, completed one of the rarest plays in all of baseball, a triple play.

With the score, Leachville 2 and Etowah 0, the bases loaded and no outs, the Etowah's batter popped a high infield fly between the pitcher and first base. With coaches, players and fans, (for both teams) all yelling and shouting directions , and base runners already heading for the next base on the ping of the bat, Austin leaned out and caught the ball for one out, tagged first base for the second out and then outran the second base runner back to second and touched the bag for the third out. The Leachville team is coached by Chuck Brown and the Etowah team is coached by Johnny McCain.

The final score was Etowah 8, Leachville 7.
