Inclement weather, graduation ceremonies and sports banquets forced the postponement of several games scheduled last week for the Lake City Little Leaguers but two home town teams managed to come up with big wins.
Lake City's 13-year-old boys defeated Harrisburg at home 12-1. Stevie Robison, Chad Nunnally, and Chase Cooper combined for a one-hitter while striking out six batters. Shawn Matthews socked a solo homerun while Garrett Weaver, Dillon Dement, and Travis Mays all doubled for the 13's.
In other boys action, the Jr. Babe Ruth team was rained out. The Majors lost to Valley View 1-0 at Lake City. Coach Benji Barnes said, "The game was a pitcher's duel." "Valley View had two hits the entire game and we were no-hits."
Timmy Trinidad and Shawn Boatman pitched the game for the Majors. The Sonic Blasters, 9-10 year olds were defeated at home by the Valley View Diamondbacks 17-9 while the Rebels' Machine Pitch team lost a touch 10-9 decision at Leachville.
In Girls' softball action, Prairie Baptist, Lake City 10-and-under team, defeated Leachville 16-7 at Leachville last Monday night. Kylie Campbell singled twice and scored four runs, Taylor Boness doubled, singled, and scored a run. Lauren Weaver singled twice and added a run and Kristen Carver singled and scored a run. Winning pitcher, Kendra Staggs, tripled and singled while Rachel Deford had a single.
Beth Ann Snyder scored three runs for Prairie Baptist, Kelsey Boatman and Sara Houston each added two runs, and Allison Smith and Taylor Atkinson each added a run to round out the scoring.
On Thursday, Prairie Baptist edged out Weiner on the road, 12-11. Kendra Staggs, who pitched her team to the victory, also led the offensive attack with a double, two singles, and two runs scored. Taylor Boness had three singles and added a run. Lauren Weaver singled twice and scored a run and Beth Ann Snyder doubled and scored two runs. Taylor Atkinson singled and scored, Kristen Carner singled and Kylie Campbell added two runs. Kelsey Boatman, Allison Vincent and Sarah Houston rounded out the scoring for Prairie Baptist with one run each.
In other softball action the 16-and under team began play with a practice game at Leachville last week and will begin play against Manila Monday night at Caraway. The 12-and under team was defeated 16-14 at Weiner, and the 8 and under girls lost 2-0 to Caraway.
