Brandon Ballard pitched a two-hitter and raised his record to 8-1 for the year as the Buffalo Island Central (BIC) Mustangs raced past the Riverside Rebels 14-2 in a shortened six-inning game at the Class AA Region 4 High School Baseball Tournament at Monette.
Ballard struck out 10 batters in his route-going performance as BIC, the winner from the 3 AA district improved their record to 21-6.
Preston Despain led the BIC attack, going three for five with four RBIs and a homerun. Josh Shepard also had a big game, as he was three for four with three RBIs. Mark Hawkins and Chris Deeds both went two for three. Deeds had two RBIs. Brooks Taylor was one for four with two RBIs while Matthew Ibanez went one for one with two RBIs.
Michael Dewitt was one for two for Riverside with an RBI. Tyler Tims went one for three. Matt Owens, the losing pitcher for Riverside, had an RBI.
Coach Kevin Hall of Riverside, whose team finished the season 9-18, said, "We struggled the whole game to string hits together. Ballard got the job done on the mound for them. They put the ball in play and had several guys who hit the ball well."
BIC Coach Bill Taylor said, "Brandon was dominant today. This is what we expect him to do when he goes to the mound for us. The defense was solid behind him and offensively we had several kids to really step it up."
BIC faced Rector Monday in a semi-final game.
