Successes mount for Riverside netters

Riverside's Rebels, boys and girls, continued to have success on the tennis courts during a busy week of action in preparation for the upcoming district tournament.

On Monday, the Rebel netters traveled to Nettleton participating in a four team match with the host Raiders as well as Walnut Ridge and Weiner.

The boys went 5-1 in the one day round robin match defeating Weiner and Walnut Ridge 2-love and splitting with Nettleton 1-1.

In singles action the Rebels Lee Blake defeated Weiner's Zach Lawrence 6-1. Von McDaniel topped Jonathon Wichman of Walnut Ridge 7-6 (7-4), while Nettleton's Bryan Finley edged the Rebel's Josh Ball in a thrilling 7-6, 7-5 match.

In boys doubles play, Lee Blake teamed with Dustin Kelems to defeat Walnut Ridges' Wichman and Watson 7-6, 7-4. McDaniel and Ball led the Rebels with a 6-0 whitewash of Nettleton's Finley and Keith Palsgrove. Riverside's Bryan McCormick and Josh Ball edged Walnut Ridges' team of Wilson and Lawrence 7-5.

In girls' play the Lady Rebels went 3-3 on the day. Riverside swept Weiner 2-love, split with Nettleton 1-1, and lost to Walnut Ridge 0-2.

The victories for the Rebels, who played without three of their top players due to an FBLA trip, came from Miranda Boyd in singles. Boyd beat Weiner's Monica Scott 6-1, while in doubles' action Boyd and Chasity Chisnall won over the Weiner team of Lacey Gebhart and Ashley Davis 6-1.

Tuesday's action saw the Rebels sweep Ridgefield Christian 4-0 in boys play and 3-1 in girls' action.

Josh Ball and Chris Poindexter both won their singles matches, while Lee Blake and Dustin Kelems along with Von McDaniel and Allen Luff captured doubles matches for the Rebels.

In girls play, Riverside and Ridgefield split matches. The Rebels won the first match as Chasity Chisnall beat Jana Hutchison 6-4, before Natalie Reeves beat Riverside's Miranda Boyd 7-5.

In doubles play the team of Chisnall-Boyd won two matches 6-0 in the first and 6-3 in the nightcap.

The Rebels capped off the week by rolling over the Trumann Wildcats, 5-0 in boys play while the Lady Wildcats won the only doubles match to salvage a 2-2 tie in girls' action Thursday at Lake City.

Riverside's Von McDaniel started the Rebel boys on the right track with a 6-3 win over Blake Wright. Allen Luff followed up with a 6-0 thrashing of the Wildcats' Michael Clayton. Josh Ball continued the singles blitz with a 6-1 win over Chad Moss and Chris Poindexter completed the sweep with a 6-1 victory over Trumann's Michael Wilcoxen.

Lee Blake and Dustin Kelems pounded out a 6-love win over the Cats team of Wright and Moss.

The Riverside girls got two singles wins from Chelsea Couch and Casey Peaster. Couch beat Trumann's Kelly Adams 6-2 while Peaster edged Beth Hayes 7-6.

Trumann came back to gain a split for the day by winning the final singles match and the only doubles contest of the afternoon.

The Rebel boys improved to 8-2-2 for the year, while the girls stand at 5-5-2.
