Mustangs fall in tourney semifinals

After shutting out Riverside, 10-0, in the opening round of the County Tournament in Jonesboro Saturday, the Buffalo Island Central Mustangs fell in the semifinals to Bay, 5-1. Brett Sexton, Chris Deeds and Brandon Ballard notched the only hits for BIC in the game.

Ballard improved his undefeated season record to 6-0 hurling four innings and giving up only one hit in the day's opening win over Riverside. Sexton pitched two scoreless innings in relief for the save.

Josh Nettles picked up three hits, scored one run and had two RBIs. Mark Hawkins hit safely twice. Scored a run and knocked in one RBI. Sexton belted two hits and plated three runs with Josh Shepard notching two hits and two runs scored.

On Friday, the Mustangs traveled to Senath where Derek Rolland (2-0) earned the victory in a 9-3 Mustang victory. Rolland went 6 1/3 innings giving up two hits and no earned runs. Rolland also had eight strikeouts in the game. Preston Despain reached base all five of his trips to the plate, going three for three and taking two bases on balls. Despain scored two runs and had two RBIs. Shepard had two hits and three runs scored, Sexton scored three runs with three RBIs on two hits and Ballard contributed with one runs scored on one hit with one RBI.

Last Tuesday, the Mustangs defeated Marked Tree, 8-1. Sexton (3-0) earned the win scattering five hits and giving up one run with six strikeouts and no walks.

Hawkins had three hits and two runs scored in the win with Brooks Taylor scoring one run with two RBIs on one hit. Despain and Shepard each had one RBI each with a hit and a run scored, respectively. Deeds had one hit and two runs scored.

The Mustangs now stand at 17-5 on the year.

Tuesday BIC was scheduled to travel to Walnut Ridge to take on the Bobcats before traveling to Blytheville on Wednesday. The Mustangs wrap up their regular season Thursday afternoon at Marmaduke.
