The Manila school choirs traveled to Nettleton High School March 7 and 8 to participate in the Northeast Arkansas Region Festival.
Five choirs from Manila competed. Each group was adjudicated by a panel of three judges on their accuracy of music, vocal technique, ensemble, style and general effect. The choirs performed music they have been preparing since January.
The results were as follows: junior high girls I (100) I (96) I (95); junior high select I (96) I (94) I (91); senior high varsity I (95) I (95) I (93); senior high madrigals I (97) I (95) I (95); girls chorus I (99) I (96) I (95). All five groups also received Division I ratings on sight reading. Each group had a seven minute period to learn and sing a song they had not previously seen.
Pam Chipman, Manila choir director, said she is very proud of her students.
"With all of the days missed because of snow, the students had to attend extra rehearsals and work very hard to learn the music and their effort paid off," Chipman said. "We are grateful for the parents and chaperones for their help and attendance at the festival."
