Area teams participate in regional tourneys

With the district tournaments now complete throughout Northeast Arkansas, local teams now turn their attention to their respective regional tournaments being played this week. In the Class AAA Region 2 Tournament, played at Newport High School, teams from the 2AAA, 3AAA-North and 3AAA-South begin their chase for a spot in the state tournament next week at Prescott. Early round games started Monday, with four games on the schedule.

In the girls division, Valley View plays Cave City at 4:00 p.m. and Hoxie plays Riverview at 7:00 p.m. The boys division starts Monday as well, with Gosnell facing Mountain View at 5:30 p.m. and Highland facing host Newport at 8:30 p.m. The first round concludes on Tuesday, with four more games on the schedule. In the boys division, Cave City faces Hoxie at 5:30 p.m. and Brookland faces Rivercrest at 8:30 p.m., while in the girls division, Mountain View faces Corning at 4:00 p.m. and Pocahontas faces Harrisburg at 7:00 p.m. The winners of these games advance to the second round, where they will face the four top seeds in the tournament.

In the boys division, Pocahontas, winners of the 3AAA North District, will face the winner of Gosnell and Mountain View Wednesday at 5:30 p.m, while EPC, the second seed from the 3AAA-South face the winner of Cave City and Hoxie Thursday at 5:30 p.m. Other second round games in the boys division include Osceola facing the winner of Highland and Newport and Heber Springs facing the winner of Brookland and Rivercrest. In the girls division, Highland faces the winner of Valley View and Cave City, Manila faces the winner of Mountain View and Corning, Rivercrest faces the winner of Hoxie and Riverview and Heber Springs facing the winner of Pocahontas and Harrisburg. The semifinals will be held Friday, with the finals being held Saturday night. The third place game of the tournament will be held at 1:00 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

In the Class AA Region 4 tournament, played at Marmaduke High School, basketball fans will see a showcase of some of the best teams in Northeast Arkansas. The tournament features BIC and Hughes in the boys division, while the girls tournament features Marmaduke and Turrell, two teams in the top five in Class AA in the state of Arkansas. The tournament begins Wednesday, with four games on the schedule. In the girls division, they include Marmaduke facing Hughes at 4:00 p.m. and Turrell facing Crowley's Ridge Academy at 7:00 p.m. In the boys division, BIC, winners of the 3AA North District face Parkin at 5:30 p.m., while Hughes, winners of the 3AA South face Maynard at 8:30 p.m. The first round concludes Thursday with four more games on the schedule. In the girls division, Earle, runner up in the 3AA South faces Maynard at 4:00 p.m., while Bay, runner up in the 3AA North district, faces Marked Tree, the fourth seed of the 3AA South Thursday at 7:00 p.m. In the boys division, Crawfordsville faces host Marmaduke Thursday at 5:30 p.m., while Bay faces Marked Tree at 8:30 p.m. The semifinals of the tournament will be held Friday night, with the tournament finals being held Saturday.

The top two teams from each division in the Class AA Region 4 tournament will advance to the Class AA State Tournament next week at Newark. The top four teams from the Class AAA Region 2 tournament will advance to the Class AAA State Tournament at Prescott. Both state tournaments will be held on March 4-8, with the state finals being held March 14-15 in Pine Bluff.
