Mustangs top Rector

RECTOR -- Spurred on by a 28 point outburst by Brandon Ballard, the Buffalo Island Central (BIC) Mustangs, currently ranked no. three in the state in class AA, ran past a game bunch of Rector Cougars 82-47 at Rector Friday night in a 2AA North Conference game.

The Mustangs struck early as a Cal Rose pass to Ballard at 7:54 resulted in a lay-up and a 2-0 BIC lead.

After Alex Hatcher was fouled shooting inside, his subsequent free throws evened things up 2-2 at 7:43.

Brooks Taylor then passed to Ballard who banked in a short deuce from just outside the lane and BIC was ahead 4-2 at 7:19.

A trey by Mark Teguns at 6:25 followed by an outside deuce by Teguns at 5:45 and BIC had leaped to a 9-2 lead.

The Cougars then narrowed the gap as a driving lay-up by Hatcher at 5:20 and a trey by Ryan Carpenter at 4:52 made the scoreboard read 9-7.

Taylor then came up with a steal and passed to Rose who was fouled. Awarded two foul shots Rose hit them both at 4:12 and the score was 11-7.

A drive inside by Rose at 3:54 left the score 13-7.

James Hemphill then passed inside to Kyle Souder whose lay-in at 3:36 made it 13-9.

After Taylor hit one of two free throws a Mark Hawkins trey at 2:48 left the score 17-9.

When Chris Beck netted an answering trey at 2:26 the score was 17-12.

Ballard would score inside at 2:09 as he was fouled. He nailed the ensuing free throw and BIC led 20-12.

After Bryce Conley scored in the paint to make it 20-14 the Mustangs would end the frame with a 10-0 eruption as they led 30-14 at its end.

The points were scored on a lay-up by Rose, a 3-point play by Ballard who was fouled while scoring inside and a 4-point play by Teguns who was fouled while hitting a trey with 0.7 seconds showing on the scoreboard.

BIC scored the first seven points of the second quarter as they stretched their run to 17-0 before Souder scored inside after a pass from Jay Beacham at 5:40 to make it 37-16.

Well in control and clicking on all cylinders, the Mustangs led 51-22 at halftime.

BIC was up 72-40 at the end of three quarters as they increased their record to 20-2 (7-0) for the year. The Cougars are 3-11 (0-6) on the year.

For the Cougars Souder scored 10 points, Carpenter tallied 7 points and Hatcher and Beacham each scored 4 points. Matt Hill and Beck each scored 3 points. Hemphill, Conley and Bryan Backer had 2 points apiece.

In addition to Ballard's 29 points, other scorers for BIC were Hawkins with 13 points, Taylor had 12, Teguns 11 and Rose scored 7. Josh Shepard had 5 points, Brett Sexton scored 3, Daniel Ferris had 3, Kenny Garrett and Max Wyss each had 2 points and Jonas Rose had 1 point.

Mustang Coach Bill Taylor said, "Tonight was our twentieth win, we're glad to get it but the most important thing about tonight's win is that we are still undefeated in our conference at 7-0. Our conference games are what we really focus on so our next important game will be next Tuesday against CRA."

About Ballard Coach Taylor said, "He helped get us going in the first quarter. He had 28 points and he must have had around 20 rebounds, a good night for him."

About polls Coach Taylor said, "We don't really worry about polls. We just take each game as it comes and try to get better. If we do our job the polls will take care of themselves."

Rector Coach Adam Simmons said of his Cougars, "We played an outstanding ball club tonight. They have a good program. They are well coached and I wish them the best of luck."

BIC won the junior high game 55-13 to go 20-0 for the year. Lance Davis scored 12 points for BIC, Larry Reed had 11, Derek Rolland had 7 points. Hunter Smith and Eric Wallace each scored 6 points. Jordan Griggs scored 5 points, Chris Deeds scored 4 and Shane Barnes scored 2 points.

For the Cougars Jake Holcomb scored 4 points, Jeremy Beck had 3 points and Chase Sain, Daniel Hester and Andrew Hill had 2 points apiece.
