JONESBORO The Buffalo Island Cental Mustangs, seeded first in the A-AA bracket of the NEA tournament, were stunned by eighth-seeded Maynard last Thursday, 65-63.
BIC, down by eight points in the fourth quarter, staged a rally that brought them back to tie the game at 63-all with under a minute to play.
Maynard's Braden Watson knocked down a jumper in the lane with 1.6 seconds to play and the Tigers took a two-point lead.
BIC had one last chance to tie the game but Mark Hawkins of BIC apparently was fouled on the inbounds play and no whistle sounded and the final buzzer went off.
Brooks Taylor led all Mustangs on the night with 26 points.
Buffalo Island connected for a total of 12 threes on the night including five from Hawkins.
The Mustangs claimed a forfeit victory over Salem in round two action after receiving a bye in the first round.
