BIC junior girls place second at Tri-County tournament

PARAGOULD Buffalo Island Central Junior Lady Mustangs lost a heartbreaker to the Paragould Junior Lady Rams 43-39 in the Tri-County finals Saturday. BIC trailed 7-9 after one and tied the game at 15 by the half. Paragould pulled ahead 24-19 in the third. The Junior Lady Rams held the lead until the 3:26 mark in the fourth. BIC's Nan Lee Bridges sank one of two free throws putting the Lady Mustangs up 30-28 with 1:31 remaining. Bridges returned to the line to sink one more free throw for a 31-28 advantage with 49 seconds left in regulation. Both teams turned the ball over twice each in the next 15 seconds. Jessica Shepard hit two free throws with 16 seconds left to give BIC a 33-30 lead. The Lady Mustangs fouled Paragould twice sending the Lady Rams to the line hitting three of four to tie the game 33-33. Bridges' shot missed its mark sending the game into overtime.

Shepard's one free throw put BIC up 34-33 before a basket by Paragould put the Lady Rams up by one. Two free throws put Paragould up 37-34 and they never gave up their advantage taking the championship 43-39.

BIC Coach Mike Kinard was very proud of his team. "We gave it our heart and soul but couldn't make the plays at the end," Kinard said.

He went on to say, "Coach Moon and his staff do a good job. I have to say hats off to Paragould for making the plays at the end."

Jessica Shepard led BIC with 19 followed by 10 from Nan Lee Bridges. Ashley Tate added nine and Katie Olive put in one for the Lady Mustangs.

The Junior Lady Mustangs defeated Riverside in semi-final action 44-27. Nan Lee Bridges led all scorers with 20 points. Others scoring for BIC were Jessica Shepard 9; Ashley Tate 6; Lauryn Smith 4; Kasey Garrett 3; and Katie Olive 2.

Marisa Johnson led Riverside with 14. Others scoring were Sam Dunigan 7; Kelsea Turner 3; Magen Adams 2 and Jona Dixon 1.

BIC defeated Armorel 47-10 in first round action. Nan Lee Brdiges led with 10 points. Scoring in the win were Ashley Tate 8; Jessica Shepard 8; Stephanie Baldridge 6; Lauryn Smith 4; Kasey Garrett 3 and 2 each from Tiffany Parker, Jency Key, Kayla Harrison, and Landra Barrett.
