Riverside's Lady Rebels combined timely 3-point shooting with a strong rebounding effort from Amanda Jo Churchill to deny the treasure-seeking Lady Pirates of Gosnell the victory in a 60-54 see-saw battle Thursday night in Caraway.
A 3-pointer by Riverside's Keryn Douglas and another by Chelsea Couch aided the Rebels in taking a 13-11 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Second quarter action saw the Lady Pirates take the lead 20-16 before the Rebels' Miranda Stephens was fouled, making good on both attempts at the line followed by a game tying basket by Couch. But again the Rebels fell behind in the second period, this time by five, only to battle back with a basket by Couch, a free throw by Amanda Milligan, and a lay-up from Stephens to tie the game 25-25. The pesky Pirates continued their quest and closed out the first half up by two 29-27.
Lady Rebel Hailey Faulkner began the third quarter with a turn around jumper to tie up the Pirates 29-29. Churchill and Douglas combined for Riverside's next nine points but Gosnell would not go away. The game was knotted again before Churchill was fouled and made good both attempts. Following a Pirate core, Milligan added two to close out the third quarter up 42-40.
The Lady Pirates pulled within one point of the Lady Rebels twice in the final period but each time big baskets by Churchill and Milligan put the Rebels back in the lead. The Rebels held on to win their seventh game of the season, 60-54.
Churchill finished with 8 points and 15 rebounds. Douglas and Couch scored 16 and 15 respectively. Milligan made 9, Stevens add 8 and Faulkner had 4.
Lady Rebel Coach Nancy Ritter said, "Churchill had a big game and got a lot of rebounds for us. She was crucial for us tonight. Keryn Douglas hit a big three. We need to work on our press offense but we made better decisions tonight. We are coming along."
The Junior Lady Rebels defeated Gosnell 27-20. Sam Dunigan led Riverside with 12, Emily Hook had 5, Marissa Johnson and Jona Dixon scored 4 each and Magan Adams added 2.
On Monday night the Junior Rebels defeated Armorel 37-23. Dunigan netted 13 for Riverside.
