Chelsea Couch came off the bench and recorded a double-double to spark the Riverside Lady Rebels to a 66-53 win over the Marked Tree Lady Indians in senior girls' basketball action Thursday night at Caraway.
Miranda Stephens scored Riverside's first three points of the game as she was fouled twice in the early going and connected on three of four attempts. Marked Tree followed with three consecutive lay-ups before Riverside took it's first time out down 6-3. Both teams traded baskets before Stephens hit a trey to tie the game 8-8 with 3:16 left in the first quarter. Riverside's Keryn Douglas and Miranda Boyd each got baskets before Stephens scored two, was fouled, and completed the three-point play. The Lady Indians made consecutive baskets before Couch entered the game with 10 seconds left in the first quarter scoring two, making it 17-12 Lady Rebels.
Douglas nailed a three pointer to begin the second period and Boyd added two, pushing the Rebel lead to 10 before Couch connected for two following a Marked Tree basket. The Lady Indians added two more but Riverside's Douglas hit another trey and Stephens tallied two more, extending the Rebel lead to 29-16 with 3:45 left in the half. The Lady Indians did not quit and rolled off the next six points cutting the Rebel lead to seven before Couch countered with six points of her own. Marked Tree then scored two free shots on two separate fouls before Couch got a rebound and stick back on a Lady Rebel miss. The half ended with the Rebels ahead 37-24.
Stephens began the third quarter scoring a basket, and the Lady Indians followed suit before Lady Rebel Amanda Jo Churchill was fouled and hit both attempts at the line with 6:18 left in the third.
Riverside's Amanda Milligan scored two and Stephens and Boyd hit for two more buckets but the Lady Indians continued to battle and their third quarter ended with the Rebels up 11, 47-36.
Riverside's Hailey Faulkner began the fourth quarter with a free throw following a foul. Marked Tree added a bucket to cut the Rebel lead to 10, 48-38. Boyd connected for two and Couch scored a lay-up following another Lady Indian bucket. Stephens came up big again in the fourth adding a three following another Marked Tree basket and Douglas rolled off four points of her own before Couch again added two on a Rebel miss with a stick back. The Lady Indians made a lay-up before Douglas added three and couch two more and the Lady Rebels secured a 66-53 victory.
Couch finished the game with 18 points and 10 rebounds, Stephens scored 18, Douglas 15, Boyd 8, Milligan 4, Churchill 2 and Faulkner 1.
The Lady Indians were paced by Rudi Martin with 22 and Christy Shaw with 10.
First year Rebel Couch Nancy Ritter said, "We played well defensively but we need to work on our press offense."
Rebel Chelsea Couch added, "We worked very well together tonight and played good defense."
The Junior Lady Rebels made it a sweep with a 43-12 win over the junior Lady Indians. Emily Hook, Samantha Dunigan and Marissa Johnson each scored 11, followed by Magan Adams and Amber Nelson with four each while Emma Wilson added two.
Desiree Upshaw led the Lady Indians with 10.
The Lady Rebels will play host to Gosnell at Caraway on Thursday night.
