Riverside boys thrash Maynard, 90-72

Thursday, November 14, 2002

Dustin Kelems scored 29 points and Matt Owens 26 as the Riverside Rebels exploded for 55-second half points enroute to a 90-72 thrashing of the Maynard Tigers in 3AA North Conference action Friday night at Maynard.

Before the lights went out on Maynard, the lights went out in the Tiger gymnasium delaying the start of what turned out to be an action packed contest.

Both teams raced up and down the floor, trading basket for basket as the Tigers pulled out to a 22-16 first quarter lead.

The second quarter was no different as Daniel Cagle scored on a lay-up and was fouled. Cagle completed the three-point play to give Maynard its biggest lead 24-16 at the 7:16 mark. After another three-point play by Justin Tidwell stretched the Tiger lead to 27-16, Riverside took a timeout. From that point on, the Rebels turned it on. Kelems started the comeback with a lay-up and then Alex Smith converted a three-point play. Joe Ellis, Matt Owens and Kelems then scored consecutive baskets to pull Riverside within two points 31-29 at the 2:07 mark of the second quarter.

After Tidwell broke the Rebel run with a 10-footer, Matt Owens ripped a trey from deep in the right corner and the Rebels trailed by only one 33-32 with1:30 to go in the half. The Tigers managed to hold off the Rebels to take a 37-35 lead into the dressing room.

The fireworks were just starting as Kelems and company came out blazing to start the third quarter. Kelems poured in nine and Owens seven to offset a three-point Maynard barrage to take a 62-55 lead entering the final frame.

Braden Watson started the fourth quarter by making one of 2 at the charity line to cut the Rebel lead to six 62-56. But that would be as close as the Tigers would get,

Kelems controlled the inside, while Owens, Ellis, and sophomore Zach Reynolds struck from long range to give the Rebels their second road win of the week. Riverside gets off to a good start in conference play improving to 3-3 overall and 1-0 in the league. Maynard dropped to 5-2 and 0-2 in the 3AA North.

"We're starting to put things together," said Rebel Coach Buster Campbell. "Kelems was strong inside and Matt Owens did a great job penetrating. We are looking better on the boards and are starting to believe in ourselves," Campbell added.

Riverside was led by the 29 points from Kelems who also pulled down a season high 14 rebounds. Owens added 26, Ellis 13, and Reynolds chipped in 12 as the Rebels put four players in double figures. Zach Ridge and Alex Smith pitched in four points each while Dylan Dunkerson rounded out the Rebel assault with two.

Maynard placed four players in double digits as well with Josh Cagle leading the way with 21. Daniel Cagle scored 16, Watson scored 14 and Tidwell hit for 10.

Riverside made it a sweep on the night as the Junior Rebels remained undefeated at 6-0 with a 51-32 victory over the Junior Tigers.

The Rebels placed three players in double figures led by Jordan Adcock's 15. Tyler Timms and Cody Rea added 12 each. Caleb McCluskey scored seven, M.J. Emery had three and Jordan Philips added two to round out the scoring for Riverside.

Riverside will continue conference action this week traveling to Marmaduke Tuesday night and them host Valley View at Lake City Friday night.

The Valley View game will be homecoming night for the Senior Rebels.
