The highly regarded Mustangs of Buffalo Island Central (BIC) notched an impressive 64-45 win over Izard County Consolidated Saturday evening in a game on their own court at the Joe V. Jones Tip Off Classic.
A late quarter offensive board putback by Mark Teguns gave BIC a 15-13 lead after one frame.
A fusillade of second quarter three-pointers would push BIC to a 37-18 halftime lead. Momentarily slowing the action down the Mustangs meaningfully passed the ball until one of their talented three-point shooters was wide open. The six three-pointers that were made in the frame attest to the effectiveness of their passes. Josh Shepard hit 3 three-pointers in the frame, Cal Rose hit two and Mark Hawkins nailed one.
The Mustangs lead was 55-31 after three quarters.
Brandon Ballard led the Mustangs in scoring with 18 points. Mark Hawkins scored 14 points and Josh Shepard scored 11 points before leaving the game with a head injury. Mark Teguns tallied 8 points. Cal Rose chipped in with 5 points and L. B. Cole, Josh Nettles, Kevin Davis and Matthew Ibanez each scored two points. Jason Sherrall scored 13 points for Izard County.
As BIC head coach Bill Taylor was not available for interview as he followed Shepard to the hospital, assistant BIC coach Mark Hurst said, "The kids really played hard today. We need to work on our defense. There are things we need to improve on. We shot the ball well today. Our selective three-point shooting in the second quarter took them out of their game. All in all, I would say it was a good effort."
