Manila peewees enter fourth year
The Manila peewee football team is going into its fourth year and has been a successful program, according to Jim Jones. Jones was instrumental in getting the program started in Manila.
"We are the only town in the league that does not have football in the school district," Jones said. "This is the only opportunity for some of the young men to play the sport. We have had very good support through the last three years. The city provides us a field, members of the team and parents hold fund-raisers to support the team."
Manila has two teams, a fourth and fifth grade team and a sixth grade team.
This will be Manila's first year to host the jamboree to kick off the season. The jamboree is set for Saturday, Aug. 24. Games will be played from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Six or seven teams will be in Manila for the opening games.
"We are also very excited about hosting this year's championship games," Jones said. "The season is a little longer this year," he said.
Sign-ups are being held for the upcoming season.
"We will suit up as many as sign up. We had about 48 kids playing last year," Jones said. "We also need adult volunteers that would like to help. We need referees, `chain gangs,' concession workers and more." Anyone interested in helping may call Jones at 561-4140.
Joining Jones coaching this year's teams are Scott Wallace and Logan Wallace.
"We are looking forward to a good season," Jones said. "We are working on the field and will have it ready for the jamboree. We invite everyone to come watch the boys play. I guarantee you will enjoy it."
