Golfers unite for cancer benefit tournament
MANILA -- Ten three-person teams golfed for fun and a great cause at the Buffalo Island American Cancer Relay For Life golf tournament held at Big Lake Country Club Monday, July 15.
Relay for Life committee members Shelia Spurlock, Brenda Matheny, Janice Edgin and Lynda Edwards hosted the event serving lunch to the participants. Area businesses and individuals sponsored the event with prizes and tee box sponsorships.
The 10 teams included Lee Spurlock, Jim York and Nathan Sanders; Mike Bridges, Bob White, and Geral Hudspeth; Mari Hayden, Dickie Pace and Tim Bassing; T.J. Carr, Shane Birmingham, and Darrell Birmingham; James Keith, Tommy Stockton and Roland Wells; Terry Brewer, Dana Donner and Tony Peterson; Stan Whitlow, Tracy Chun and Michael Edwards; Ronnie Kennett, John Edwards and Mac Williams; Bryan Kirby, Barry Kirby and Ken Eaton; Randy Ladd, Michelle Eubanks and Connie Adams.
The golf tournament is one of the first fund raisers for the September Relay for Life event. The tournament raised $1,760.
Spurlock said she was very pleased with the volunteers that helped with the tournament, the participants, the sponsors and Big Lake Country Club for their assistance. Bryan Kirby and Terry Carr helped in the organization of the tournament. Carr distributed soft drinks and water, helping in the field, and tallying the scores.
"Relay For Life is as much an awareness raiser about progress against cancer as it is a fund raiser," Spurlock said. "Many of the participants will be people who are cancer survivors."
Committee members Spurlock and Edgin are both cancer survivors.
"This is something we can do. We want to share hope with other cancer victims," Spurlock said. "Also, the Relay for Life event gives us a chance to remember and honor those that lost their fight against cancer."
Winning teams in the 18-hole 3-person scramble were presented with plaques.
The team of Kirby, Kirby and Eaton was third place with a 65.
The team of Carr, Birmingham and Birmingham was second place with a 64.
First place team with a 61 was the team of Brewer, Donner and Peterson.
It was announced that the sixth place team would receive a prize as well as the 10th place team.
The sixth place team of Keith, Stockton and Wells were presented with hats.
The 10th place team of Hayden, Pace and Bassing received golfing towels. They all agreed they had a good time and finished in the top 10.
Individual prizes were given for the closest shots on different holes. Winners in this category included Michelle Eubanks, Ken Eaton, Terry Brewer and T.J. Carr. Dana Donner won with the longest drive.
"I am excited about the results of the tournament and I'm grateful to Big Lake Country Club and to all the golfers who made it a success. A lot of credit is due Bryan Kirby and Terry Carr for their organizing activity. Local donors and those who provided door prizes are also to be saluted. I am hopeful that the upcoming promotional events get the same degree of support," Spurlock said.
A major wrestling event will be held at the Manila Community Center on Aug. 10.
This is the first year for the Buffalo Island Relay for Life event. Volunteers from Manila, Lake City, Caraway, Leachville, Black Oak and Monette are forming teams to participate.
