Arkansas Extreme ends season with perfect 14-0 record

Wednesday, July 3, 2002

MANILA The Manila 10 & Under fast-pitch softball team, the Arkansas Extreme, recently finished their regular season play. The team went undefeated in area play in the Buffalo Island Softball League's inaugural season of fast-pitch play.

The Extreme opened their season with sweeping victories in the Harrisburg tournament, winning by scores of 12-2, 13-1 and 10-0. The team completed league play against Lake City, Monette, Caraway, Harrisburg, Weiner, Valley View and Leachville with a prefect record of 14-0, combining to outscore their opponents 237-36 (a per game average of 17-2).

They then concluded their regular season by winning the league tournament where they defeated Valley View, Harrisburg and Lake City in consecutive victories. The highlight of the tournament came in the semifinals against Lake City when Shelby Wise hurled a no-hitter en route to a 10-0 Extreme victory. The first Lake City batter made it to first base on a walk, but no other Lake City batter made it to base for the remainder of the game. Wise struck out 11 batters in five innings and threw just nine pitches in the third inning to strike out all three batters. Strong defense for the Extreme, anchored by Katie Donner, helped preserve Wise's no-hitter.

Coach Susan Wise credits the entire team for this seasons success. She said, "Jonna Dodd, Katie Donner, Erin Flagg, Brooke Hill and Natalie Noble are excellent bunters and Shelby and Kimberly Wise are consistent long ball hitters. Donner, Hill, Kimberly (Wise), Kylle Scott and Leigha Woody make up a strong infield. Behind the plate, Woody threw out several unners attempting to steal this season. The pitching of Abby Wise, Kimberly Wise and Shelby Wise was outstanding, and , as a team, the girls are all excellent baserunners and sliders. Defensively, they support one another through back-ups to keep the cost of errors down to a minimum. All 13 girls on the team are very talented and hard-working."

To gain further experience, the team played in additional tournaments in the Memphis and Dyersburg areas. They also played in a 12 & under tournament to prepare for the faster pitching they expect to see when they travel to Bentonville to participate in the State Tournament July 5-7.

Team members are Abby Wise, Erin Flagg, Katie Donner, Brooke Hill, Kathryn Simpson, Shelby Wise, Kimberly Wise, Jonna Dodd, Natalie Noble, C. J. Wallace, Leigha Woody and Linsey Ellis.

The team is coached by Susan Wise, Susan Hill and Dale Woody. The team is sponsored by Heritage Bank.
