Manila cheerleaders bring camp home

Thursday, June 13, 2002

Instead of packing and going to camp, the Manila junior and senior cheerleading squads brought the camp to them.

For the first time Manila cheerleaders were treated to a private camp at their own school. Instructors Amy Wiltshire of Russellville and Morgan Glasgow of Jonesboro with the Universal Cheerleader's Association (UCA) held a three-day camp at MHS.

The cheerleaders received instruction in dance, routine, cheers, tumbling and stunting.

Scottie Reinhart, Manila cheerleading sponsor, talked to the girls about scheduling a private camp and they liked the idea.

Jenny Ellis, co-captain of the junior high squad, said she has enjoyed the private camp.

"We get to go home to our own bed at night. We receive more one-on-one training and we get to know our instructors and they get to know us," Jenny said.

Ashley Metheny, captain of the senior high squad, has attended several cheerleading camps and she agreed that she has enjoyed the private camp.

"I think we have learned a lot more and we have had a very successful camp," Ashley said.

The camp was held Monday through Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Reinhart said the girls have worked hard and have the same number of hours that they would have had at a team camp.

Local businesses, Farmers Market Pizza Pro, Sonic and Subway, donated lunches each day for the participants.

The instructors will evaluate the squads and they receive the same ratings they would have at a team camp. Individual ribbons were presented in competition. In addition, the instructors named the All Star cheerleaders and they will be able to compete.

At the end of the camp, a swimming party was held from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the Fleeman home and a slumber party for the cheerleaders was held at the Manila Airport Center.

Members of the senior high squad are Megan Ashabranner, Ashley Metheny-captain, Morgan Moore, Brooke Brown, Jodie Cherry, Sarah Hargrave, Maegan Shelton, Allison York-mascot, Holly McGuire, Codie Moore, Melissa Parker, Michelle Stone, Brittni Sammons and Morgan Adams.

Members of the junior high squad are Jenny Ellis-co-captain, Katie Master-co-captain, Lexia Beaver, Whitney Jackson, Kaitlin Minton, Jessica Fleeman, Jenni Miller, Kayla Hobeck, Kelsey Cherry and Logan Towels.
