Vernon Brooks - Doniphan, Mo.

Vernon Lemmie Brooks, 77, of Doniphan, Mo., died Sunday, June 2, 2002, at Methodist Central Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. He was the son of the late Lemmie F. Brooks and Minnie Millhouse Brooks. Born Sept. 27, 1924, in Geneva, Mo., he was a member of the American Legion and served with the U.S. Navy in World War II.

He is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Ava Nell and Lannie Barnes of Arbyrd, Cheryl and Terry Lee of Doniphan, and Margaret and Kent Moore of Manila; a brother, George Brooks of Kennett; four grandchildren, Melissa Smith, Morgan Moore, Weston Moore, and Molly Lee; two great-grandchildren, Kalli Smith and Kyler Smith.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Helen Christian Brooks, on Oct. 9, 1995.

The funeral was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Hornersville First Baptist Church with Rev. David Powell and Rev. Doug Clinton officiating. Burial was in the Horner Cemetery at Hornersville. McDaniel Funeral Home of Hornersville was in charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers were Jimmie Lee, Brent Moore, Barry McFarland, Joe Buck, Bobby Moore and Donald Lee Hert.
