Manila juniors capture preseason tourney
HARRISBURG - Manila's Junior Babe Ruth season got underway Friday, April 26 as they traveled to Harrisburg and defeated valley View 9-3 in the first round of the Harrisburg pre-season tournament.
The Lions exploded in the top of the first inning, scoring six times on four hits. Manila was aided by two walks and aggressive base-running that forced two valley View errors in the inning. The big blow came off the bat of Anthony Cavazos who cleared the bases with a ringing two-out, bases-loaded double into the gap in left-center field.
Matt Noble went the distance on the mound for Manila to pick up the win. Noble allowed three runs, scattering eight hits while striking out eleven and walking three. Cavazos led the offensive attack with one hit and three RBI's. Noble finished with three hits, Jordan Wise had two hits in four plate appearances, P.J. Brumley was two for four with an RBI, Josh McDaniel contributed a hit and two RBI's, and Cody Wells and Jackey Parker had one hit each.
The Lions won their second game of the early season Saturday defeating Harrisburg 12-1 in the finals of the Harrisburg pre-season tournament to claim the tournament championship. Josh McDaniel captured the victory pitching five innings and allowing only one run on one hit while striking out eight and walking two.
The Lions got all the scoring they needed in the first as they plated two runs. P.J. Brumley led off the game with a single to left. Jordan Wise followed with a single down the left field line. After Matt Noble walked to load the bases, McDaniel knocked in the first run with a sacrifice fly to center field. Cody Wells' infield single pushed across the second run of the inning. Manila scored in every inning including a five-run fourth that set the final score.
Boo Grayson had a big day at the plate with two hits and four RBI's. Jordan Wise was perfect in the hitting department with two hits and two walks as was Matt Noble who finished with one hit and walked three times. P.J. Brumley had two hits in four plate appearances and Cody Wells and Josh McDaniel contributed one hit each. McDaniel also had three RBI's.
