Manila places third in 3-AAA South district golf tournament

MANILA Valley View won the 3-AAA South District golf championship here Thursday at the Big Lake Country Club with a 172. Trumann finished second with a 175. Manila finished third with a 179.

Conditions were perfect for golf. It was in the upper 70s with a slight breeze. The sky became overcast at the end of the tournament but no rain fell.

For Valley View, Chase Aikins shot a 100. Craig Duncan, the medalist of the event, shot a 75. Jake Sitz and Nowlin Dills shot a 97 and 99, respectively.

For Trumann, Clay McClung shot an 87. Chase Montgomery and Lucas Miller shot an 88 and 100, respectively. Andrew Walter was disqualified.

For Manila, Klayton Seyler shot an 85. Kenneth Seyler shot a 96. Stephan Halfacre and Seth Chipman each shot a 94

Westside finished fourth in the tournament with a 206. Josh Phillips shot a 98. Heath Robertson shot a 108. Matt Nix and Aaron Smith shot a 117 and 137, respectively.

East Poinsett County finished fifth with a 211. Lee Long shot a 105. Jeremy Knapp shot a 106. Clint Wallace and Casey Duffle shot a 122 and 133, respectively.

Harrisburg finished sixth with a 224. Brandon Neal shot a 105. Tyler Riddle shot a 119. Mark Nix shot a 137.

The six best scores for those not on the qualifying teams were: Josh Phillips (Westside) 98; Lee Long (EPC) 105; Brandon Neal (Harrisburg) 105; Jeremy Knapp (EPC) 106; Matt Nix (Westside) 117 and Heath Robertson (Westside) 108.

"They played well for a young team," Trumann Coach Gary McClung said of his team. "I have three freshmen and one sophomore. They just keep getting better. Chase Montgomery shot his best score of the year. He helped us in the district."

The regional tournament was April 16. If Trumann finished in top three for teams, they qualified for state.
