Manila Quiz Bowl team wins first place in district
Bringing home trophies from the junior high Quiz Bowl competition has become a tradition for Manila Junior High teams. This year's 2001-2002 MJHS Quiz Bowl team won first place in the District Tournament Saturday held at Gosnell High School
The all boy team members are Nick Robbins, Jim Crosthwait, Landon Winberry, B.J. Stone, Cody Wells, Nathaniel Lesley, Brett Hilliard, Dustin Crawford, and James Richmond, Ryan Day and Juston Eversoll are scorekeepers. Connie Adams, Manila Gifted and Talented coordinator, serves as Quiz Bowl coach.
Nine teams participated in the tournament. The Manila team carried an average of 340 points per game. Manila competed against Piggott, Brinkley and Corning during the preliminary rounds and Piggott, Trumann and Gosnell in the final rounds.
Manila's Nick Robbins and Jim Crosthwait were named All Tournament.
The Manila team started preparing for competition in December meeting twice a week but studied every day for the past two weeks.
They all agreed that the literature questions were the most difficult for them.
The team will compete in the state tournament in February. The tournament will be held in BeeBee.
The Manila Junior High Quiz Bowl team won third place in Regional last year and second place in state.
"We are very proud of our team and the way they represented our school," Diane Wagner, junior high principal, said.
The team is looking forward to competing at the state level.
