Riverside Sr. Boys Versus Rector

Friday, January 18, 2002

With good three-point shooting, the Rector Cougars beat the Riverside Rebels 54-52 in an overtime thriller on Friday night.

"We had the lead but didn't do what we should. They hit their big shots and we didn't and that spells getting beat," said Riverside Coach Buster Campbell.

Riverside led at halftime 22-17, but at the end of the third the score was tied at 29.

The fourth quarter was really physical, and both teams were playing to win. The lead went back and forth until the three-minute mark when the Cougars dropped two three-pointers and pulled ahead by five.

The Rebels stayed tough and held the Cougars to one point in the rest of regulation. At the end of four, the score was tied at 45.

The battle continued in overtime, with neither team able to pull away by more than two. Down by two with a minute to go, the Cougars found Ryan Carpenter in the corner for a three-pointer and took the lead; 51-50.

Then with only 43 ticks on the clock, the Rebels' Jacob Couch calmly sank two free throws and put his team back in the lead.

The Cougars' Wes Harmon then decided to get in on the act and drop a three-pointer of his own. The Cougars took a 54-52 lead with 20 seconds left.

The game looked like it was over when Riverside lost the ball on the baseline, but Rector crossed the end line on the inbounds play and the Rebels were given one last chance.

The Rebels got no easy look on that last possession, and point guard Steven Dewitt was forced to put up a very long jumper. Everyone in the gym stood still and watched as the ball floated seemingly in slow motion towards the rim. The ball hit the rim, rattled around inside, and the popped back out as the final buzzer sounded.

The final in overtime was 54-52, Rector.

Jacob Couch led Riverside with 14 points. Dustin Kelems added 12.

Ryan Carpenter and Justin Goodman scored 17 for the Cougars. Wes Harmon had nine.
