Public meeting scheduled for Highway 18 study

Wednesday, January 2, 2002

The Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department has scheduled an open house public meeting for a study to widen Highway 18 from Lake City in Craighead County to Highway 119 in Mississippi County. The meeting will be held from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, in the cafeteria of Buffalo Island Central School, Highway 18 East, in Monette.

The purpose of the study, which began in September 2001, is to determine the need and feasibility of widening Highway 18 to four lanes from Lake City to Highway 119. The segments of Highway 18 between Jonesboro and Lake City, and between Highway 119 and Blytheville in Mississippi County are already programmed to be widened to four lanes with some construction now in process. The remaining 13 mile segment between Lake City and Highway 119 is the focus of the current study.

The public meeting will afford those in attendance an opportunity to comment on the project, and to provide input for the study. Representatives of the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department, as well as the consultant preparing the study, will be available to answer questions and receive comments.
