It’s gift-giving time! Have you found the perfect gift for each of your loved ones yet? I bet many of you are still struggling with that one person who is nearly-impossible to buy for. Maybe it is because you do not know what they want, which is always frustrating. Or maybe it is because you want to get them something very special, something that would cost a great deal of time or money to obtain, and you simply cannot afford to give them the gift you think they deserve.
A story is told of a man who was in that exact situation. This man had a friend whom he loved dearly, and for whom he wanted to purchase a precious gift. But he soon realized he did not have enough to pay for the gift, and he was sad. So he resolved to plant a crop for his friend, but the crop failed. When the friend of the man heard what the man had done for him, he ran to find him, embraced him, and thanked him. For it was not the gift that mattered, but the love behind it.
The most precious gift in the history of the world is Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Why would God give up his only begotten child to save wretches like us? Because, John 3:16 tells us, he loves us. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son....” It was not out of obligation, but out of overwhelming, extravagant love that the Father gave us the most precious gift of all. Regardless of what you wrap to give, give it with love. For love is what makes a gift meaningful.
