Here, in the heart of the Delta – otherwise known as Buffalo Island – names and titles mean something. If someone, for example, is regularly called boss, or Mayor, or Brother, or Sister – that usually means something. The title signals a relationship. The last name can key to a farm, an area, a family, or a long-established business.
One time a rich young man (maybe with a last name like Rockefeller, Trump, or Getty) came to ask Jesus, “Good Teacher (calling him by the title of his perceived occupation), what must I do to inherit eternal life?” “Why do you call me good?” Jesus asked. “Only God is truly good. But to answer your question, you know the Ten Commandments...no murder, stealing, adultery, lying or cheating, and honor Mom and Dad.” “Teacher (title/occupation again), the man replied, “I’ve obeyed all these commandments since I was young.”
Looking at the young man with genuine love, Jesus said, “Get the things that are coming between you and me out of the way. Sell your stuff and give the money to poor folks, and you’ll have treasure in heaven. Then come follow me.” The man’s face fell and he went away sad, because he had lots of stuff! (This passage is from Mark 10:17-21 NLT, paraphrased.)
We need that the stuff out of the way. Why? Because it is making us be the ‘Junk Man’ and the ‘Bag Lady’ instead of the “Child of God” Jesus calls us to be.
Jesus Christ is Savior, the Anointed One. The name is a title and it means something. Is Jesus our Lord? That is another title that means something. Does He rule your heart? Or do things overrule your life? We want the title of King or Queen...the One and only way to inherit the title is from God by Jesus.
Accept the call to love and be loved in a real relationship with God and the Holy Spirit through Jesus Christ. Your new title: Child of God. That means something now and forever...eternally, a relationship is established when we repent of our sins and surrender our sinful nature (all that stuff!).
That does not mean all trouble ceases in this life and birds sing sweetly as we walk by. It means we have the Savior and God, the Word of Truth, and the Holy Spirit to lead, guide, guard, and direct or present and future securely...with no need to fear death!
That is freedom--freedom from fear, sin, and slavery to self and false delusions. It comes to whomever the Lord (entitled ruler) sets free. The true Word promises that one is free. So, come on...take the challenge to take a new name, a new relationship, a new title from the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords. Make your name, title, and place in eternity worthwhile forever One with Jesus. Confess Christ Lord and Savior. Be whole.
