In Isaiah we read about the kingship of a young king named Uzziah. The prophet Isaiah was called of the Lord when Uzziah was a mid-age teenager. He came to be king when his predecessor Amaziah died. The young Uzziah came next in the lineage of King David. I think Uzziah was only a budding teenager.
The bible says he did that which was right in the service of the Lord. He got into trouble with the Lord and the Lord put upon him in his last years with leprosy until his death. Otherwise, he had tried to lead Israel as best he could in the ways of the Lord. During this time, the Lord was calling Isaiah during Uzziah's last years.
Let me read you from the sixth chapter of the book of Isaiah. In 6:1 ff reads, "In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple. Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly, and one cried to another and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of Hosts: and the whole earth is full of his glory. Then I said, woe is me! For I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips and I dwell in the midst of a people with unclean lips for mine eyes have seen the King, the Lord of Hosts."
Isaiah is a book of 66 chapters. So what you have read came in his calling. Who would be the spokesman that would help guide the young king as he developed? Isaiah said, "Here am I Lord, send me."
So you understand his concern. The king's predecessor had been a righteous king; but what would the new king be like. Like some of the wicked kings or another good king? Would he lead the people on to God or would there be some great falling into disobedience?
I have heard it said that bad leadership and a people following after him is just one generation of backsliding and return to heathenism. When I consider what has happened in the United States in my time I see a lot of good that has happened but I must be honest and say we have moved into the direction of becoming a Godless people. I have been a preacher for about 62 years and I don't feel that we are the people we should be and fear the Lord. With our next election shaping up, I have a lot of concerns of Isaiah about our future leaders. They surely need our prayers.
