In the early days of the young Jeremiah he had accepted the call of the Lord to speak his message to the people of Israel. They had gone through most of their kings and turned from being a God fearing nation to a sinful nation like those around them.
The young prophet had a big task of saying to his people they were facing a severe judgment of God.
Note his words in Jeremiah 5:iff, "Run ye to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem, and see now, and know, and seek in the broad places thereof, if you can find a man, if there be any that executeth judgment, that seeketh the truth: I will pardon it. And though they say, the Lord liveth surely they swear falsely."
When I read these two scriptures and some that follow, I was so moved that a flash of fear seemed to run down my spine. If you read your bible you would think these words were aimed at the pagan towns of Sodom and Gomorrah. The Lord sent his representatives to tell Lot and his family to get out of the wicked city for he would destroy them in the night. And He did just as He said.
But those that Jeremiah spoke were not heathens and pagans. They were the disobedient Jews, God's own people. They too, were facing the wrath and judgment of the Lord. The thing that touched me most was how similar we are in our own day and time in America.
We would like to be able to say we are a Christian nation; but I don't see any great turning back to God. If the Lord would punish Israel surely he can judge America or any other group of people. He was about ready to bring a vicious lion, wolf, or leopard from the forest to come and in the form of a strong nation to be his instrument for judgment.
It would prove to be the strong nation of Babylon that he would use. We can lull our consciences of false leaders today but we have seen in a few years what was once not even considered as dangerous people can produce much threat and danger to the rest of the world. Look what two huge airplanes did to us by a few foreigners and they have killed our defenders and the end does not seem near.
There is an answer, the only right answer is to turn back to the Lord. The need is so great. We ask the question, what can I do? One thing is for sure we need, in our own personal way, to turn back to God. Strong righteous countries need to see a lot of turning back to God. One at a time we can add to the righteousness. There has always been a number of righteous people. Jesus said we are the light of the world. Don't ever forget this.
So let's not just hopelessly sigh. Let each of us live pleasing to the Lord. God did not plan to make a full end but he let Israel lose her nationhood for 2,535 years. In my thinking this was a great judgment for their sins.
