School bells are about to start ringing across Buffalo Island. Students will soon be returning for the 2018-2019 school year.
Manila and Riverside are scheduled to start classes Aug. 13 and Buffalo Island Central students will begin Aug. 20. Teachers will be returning a week before the students.
I know I am old, but I still remember how excited we were to be getting out of school for the summer and how we dreaded starting back to school in the fall. Some of the dread was due to getting up early and having homework. I always thought I would like night school.
I am sure students and teachers are counting down the days.
Hopefully everyone had a good summer and can look forward to getting back to the classroom and spending time with friends. Students should be reminded, they have to start to finish. Each year puts them closer to graduation – the goal of each student.
I am sure most parents, like myself, did not even think so far ahead when we took our children to school for the first day of kindergarten. Then, 13 years later, we look back and wonder how the years passed so fast.
We had a really hot summer and we are never sure how long it will last in northeast Arkansas. I hope the students today appreciate their air conditioned classrooms because 50 plus years ago, we did not have the luxury of cool air.
With the beginning of school so close, it is time to get those school supplies ready. Lists for individual classrooms at different schools are in most stores. Paper, pencils, glue sticks and other school supplies are on sale, so now is the time to buy for the year.
Beginning at 12:01 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, and ending at 11:59 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 5, the State of Arkansas will hold its sales tax holiday allowing shoppers the opportunity to purchase certain school supplies, school art supplies, school instructional materials, and clothing free of state and local sales or use tax.
The tax holiday can add up to quite a bit of savings for parents, especially if they are clothing and buying supplies for several children. It really takes a lot to get them ready.
As the new school year begins it will take a few days for kids to get into the routine of going to bed earlier, getting up earlier, getting their homework done in a timely manner, and not having lazy days to enjoy.
Believe me, once children start to school, the years pass fast. Try to enjoy each day. The time will come, sooner than you think, when those children you took to kindergarten will be taking their own children on a new school year journey. Life is a circle.
This year marks 50 years since my high school days. It doesn't seem possible but the calendar does not lie.
For some students it will be their first year and for some it will be their last days of high school, but hopefully it will be a good one for all. Most young people will not even be aware they are making lifetime memories.
