We recently witnessed the rescue of the young Thailand soccer team and their coach. Rescue divers and other emergency personnel came together and made an all out effort to bring those boys out of the flooded caves.
They were brought out one and two at a time after being trapped for over two weeks. Thankfully, they were found after a long 10 days and supplies were taken to them before the rescue mission began.
I can not imagine what the the boys and their parents went through waiting and hoping they would be found and brought out of the cave alive.
The boys sent notes out to their parents and I am sure those messages gave the parents a sense of relief knowing they were alive and able to write.
Sadly, one volunteer diver did lose his life in the early stages of the rescue. He is truly a hero as he gave his life trying to save others.
I think this will be one of those events we will always remember. I remember watching the rescue of Baby Jessica, a toddler who fell into a well shaft in the 1980s. It took like 60 hours for her to be rescued and we all cheered around the televisions as she was brought out.
We have seen and read about miners who have been trapped for long periods of time before they were rescued. We wonder how anyone could survive such an ordeal but I guess we are tougher than we think.
It took several days to get all of the boys out of that cave with the rising water but the mission was accomplished and we received word on Tuesday morning all 13 were out. All 12 team members and their coach survived the dreadful ordeal. What a happy ending for the families.
The only thing I can think of that would be worse than being trapped in a cave would be having your child trapped in a cave. My heart goes out to those parents and what they have gone through.
Hopefully, these young men will always remember the people who stepped up to save them and grow up to be fine men with a thankful heart.
This story could have ended differently but thank goodness it did not.
We saw volunteers from all over the world come together to make the rescue happen. It would be nice if we could see all of our world's problems solved by working together and not have to wait for a tragedy.
As a rule, books and movies follow these type of events and thank goodness the writers and producers will be able to share the story as it actually happened because the story can be told by these young survivors and the brave resceue teams.
