Just a nice reminder income tax filing deadline is getting closer. This is a reminder to me to get it done. My husband and I just file a joint short form so it is not as much trouble as those who have to go through tons of paperwork.
According to what I read, the deadline this year is April 17. That gives us a couple extra days from the usual April 15 deadline.
At one time I was among the first to get the job done but over the last few years I seem to be dragging my feet.
So far in the 50+ years of filing income tax returns, I have always managed to get it in on time. Hopefully this year will not be an exception.
My Grandpa Chipman, a man of few words, always said the two things for sure in life are death and taxes. I guess he knew what he was talking about. When discussing taxes, he always pointed out, “never show you spent/lost more than you made unless you can show where you borrowed it.” I never asked him if those words came from personal experience.
Tax time, like Christmas or birthdays, come every year if we are ready or not so we might as well get it done.
None of us like taxes, or at least paying taxes, but we have to consider where we would be without taxes. We love good highways and schools, we know we have to have a strong military, we know our prisons have to be maintained so we really do know taxes are necessary.
On the other hand, we do want and should demand our tax dollars be spent wisely.
I read an article last week detailing the state of Arkansas' balanced budget and where the tax dollars go. It was very informative. I know our leaders have a big job and it is not always easy.
This time of the year some people are happy when they get refunds, others are unhappy when they have to pay, and then others just break even.
My husband has never worried about a refund but he always wanted to pay in enough taxes throughout the year to at least break even.
That is all I am going to say on the subject of taxes except to say one more time the deadline is getting closer.
On a lighter note, today is the first day of spring. I think most of us are ready for spring, sunshine, and longer days.
This is spring break for most of our areas schools. I know the students and teachers were ready for the week off. I hope they all enjoy. Once they come back to school, time will move fast and we will be seeing another school year ending.
It is hard to believe I have been out of school 50 years -- a half century. I don't know why those 12 school years felt so long.
That reminds me of the Manila 1960s school reunion coming up on April 21. It is time to make your plans to come home for the day. It is always good to come home and share a few memories with friends from MHS.
