Friday 13th Just another dayPosted Tuesday, January 24, 2017, at 9:00 AM
Everyone will not agree with me, but personally I am ready for spring weather. We recently made a weekend trip to visit my sister in Pensacola, Fla., and the temperature was in the high 70s. On the way home it dropped about 30 degrees and I could tell the difference as we traveled north.
Weather change is something all of us from Northeast Arkansas are familiar with. We can see the weather change several times on a daily basis, so it was not too much of a shock.
I hate to be a whiner but I have had enough winter and I hope spring comes early this year.
Cold, warm or hot, I like to see sunshine. I do think the sunshine helps puts me in a better mood. It makes me want to get out and do something constructive. Gloomy, damp weather makes me want to stay in bed.
Enough about the weather. It is what it is and we can't change it, so we will live with it. Our only option is to move to a different climate and I have no desire to move, so here I am.
Actually the topic I had in mind for this week's column was superstitions.
The trip I mentioned to Florida was made on Friday the 13th. My husband had a doctor's appointment in Little Rock and we decided when he got out of his appointment to head south for the weekend.
As we were making our last minute plans to go I realized we would be traveling on Friday the 13th. I have heard many people say they will not fly or make travel plans on Friday the 13th, but I did not think much about it. I have never been a superstitious person.
We left on Friday and arrived back home on Sunday night. I was thankful we had a safe trip. It was not because we left on Friday the 13th, I am thankful on any day we return safe after being out on the busy highways. We ran into a little fog going and coming home, but other than that, we had a smooth trip.
I have known a few people who are serious about signs of bad luck. They will not take chances and will turn around if a black cat crosses their path.
When a black cat crosses in front of my vehicle, I take notice but I keep going. The bad luck would come for the cat if he didn't make it across.
Other superstitions I have heard people claim to bring bad luck include walking under a ladder, opening an umbrella in the house, leaving from a different door than the one you came in through, a bird in the house, breaking a mirror, and even the number 13.
We have all heard of good luck charms such as a rabbit's foot; rubbing the head of someone with red hair, finding a four-leaf clover, knocking on wood, and probably a lot more I can't remember.
I don't put a lot of stock in bad luck, or good luck for that matter.
Things happen every day, sometimes it is because we are careless and sometimes things just happen out of our control. I don't think luck has anything to do with it.
We will only have one more Friday the 13th this year and it is in October. Out of curiosity I looked up the number of times the 13th falls on Friday and some years it is only once, other years like 2017 it comes twice and some years the 13th will be Friday three times.
As I have said before, I do no not like scarry movies. I do not watch the Friday 13th movies. There is Friday the 13th, Friday the 13th II, Friday the 13th III and many more. Some people like horror films and that is fine. To each his own but if I am going to spend my time and my money on watching a movie, it will not be one that will scare me and keep me from a good night's sleep.
The real world is scary enough without adding to my fears.
