It was a winning time last week for the Buffalo Island Central softball girls and Manila baseball boys as they earned a spot in their state tournaments. I want to congratulate both of them. I have played, coached and attended enough softball and baseball games to know what it takes. It is either cold or hot and always dirty. Sometimes games go into extra innings and can last a long time.
Manila High School baseball team and the Buffalo Island Central High School softball team took the championships in their regional tournaments and went off to state last week.
It is a special time for the whole team but especially for those seniors who are playing their last high school games. Whether it is basketball, baseball, track, volleyball, football or golf, we all wished for just one more game before it was over.
I want to send another message of congratulations to the area seniors. It has already been said, but you all have done a great job. It is an accomplishment and you deserve a pat on the back. Quitting is easy, finishing takes effort. It takes a lot more effort than ever before. Good job. This time next week, all of you from Manila, BIC and Riverside will be high school graduates.
I also want to give parents their just praises, also. Someone had to get them up and keep them going every day. Encourage them when things got tough and pay for all of those extras it takes. I say to the parents of this year's graduates, you did a good job, also.
I also want to wish the retiring teachers well. Some of my children's teachers have announced their plans to retire this year, along with several others in the area. I want to thank all of the teachers for their years of service. They not only teach reading and writing but they will go above and beyond to help our children succeed. They also deserve a pat on the back.
We are human, and humans are sometimes quick to complain and slow to praise. We probably need to work on reversing that habit.
We are winding down another school year. It has passed fast and next week the Town Crier will feature the graduates. I wish each and every one of them the best in their future plans.
I hope the retiring teachers have a long, happy retirement. Next August when the new school year begins and the alarm goes off, just hit the snooze button and smile.
