The first day of autumn will arrive on Friday. Autumn is my favorite time of year and I hope we have a long, pleasant fall season. I love to see the leaves turn gold and red and the cotton fields turn white.
Autumn is the transition from summer to winter and I think we will all agree we have had our share of a warm, dry summer.
As I said before, I enjoy watching the leaves turn. I enjoy driving through the Ozarks a little later just to see the trees all dressed up in fall colors. I like the cool mornings and evenings with no mosquitoes.
We can enjoy all four seasons in our corner of the world. As much as I like the fall, the same weather year round might get tiring. I like a little early frost, snow in the winter, and breeze in the spring. We get it all here.
Our weather definitely changes in Northeast Arkansas. Sometimes even in the same day. There are only a few things out of man's control in this day and age and weather is one of them. They can predict it but they can't change it.
I can't help but notice moods seem to be a bit better since the temperatures went down 10 to 15 degrees. I have seen more smiles and heard more good mornings than when the temperature was in triple digits.
We have gotten so accustomed to air conditioning it is hard for us to even smile when we are hot. We go from our cool homes to our cool cars into our cool offices or stores. We just don't like to get hot anymore.
When I think back, I don't know how we survived. It was just a way of life and it is true, we can't miss something we have never had. When it was hot, we got under a shade tree or in front of a fan. After a day of chopping cotton, the shade felt pretty good.
We had no idea of the comfort we would enjoy just a few years down the road. We purchased our first air conditioner in 1970 and we kept our house very, very cool. It was so pleasant to be able to be 68 or 70 degrees inside when it was 100 outside.
Kids today will never know about life before air conditioning as my generation will never know life without electricity, fans and screens.
It won't be long until we can give the air conditioners a break and enjoy being cool the old-fashioned way. Hopefully, we can have a few weeks before we have to turn on the heaters to keep warm.
We like our comfort whether it is summer, fall, winter or spring. We can't control the temperatures outside but we have learned to control it inside. Let's not take it for granted. I remember the days when very few automobiles had air conditioners (we traveled a lot at night), going to school without air conditioning, and trying to go to sleep when the temperature was not comfortable.
I've never heard anyone say they would like to go back to the "good old days" and I can certainly understand why.
I am going to enjoy fall as long as it stays around.
